Cape Townians as a species are coffee connoisseurs of note which is part of the reason why Starbucks just never took off in these parts. If it’s not gourmet, organic, or home roasted then is it even coffee? So when Truth Coffee was previously voted as the world’s best coffee by the Daily Telegraph you know they were onto something. This quirky industrial themed café has now expanded its menu to include afternoon tea – steampunk style. What to expect? A decadent yet unpretentious three course spread. It's all about the flavours not the fuss. The first course is Amuse Bouche made up of lemon meringue, orange blossom and grapefruit petit fours. There are also salmon and cream cheese canapés and perfectly flaky choux with mango and creamy goats cheese. Second course is titled the ‘Café Course’ which features my favourite: fresh scones baked to golden perfection with homemade preserve and clotted cream. These are accompanied by profiteroles and a chocolate and passion fruit tarte. If you manage to not pass out from satisfaction by this point, the third course is called ‘Le Grande Revelation’ which is prosciutto French camembert and blue cheese with freshly toasted croissant slices. This comes complete with a white chocolate dome dessert filled with champagne mousse and decorated with gold leaf.
In addition to all the festivities, coffee lovers will slide off their chairs because included in the price is the option of trying all of the beautiful coffees on the menu throughout the high tea experience. Yes please and thanks! Truth’s high tea takes place from Monday to Saturday from 3pm to 6pm.
