Whether you’re a documentary buff or a film addict, the Encounters Documentary Festival will definitely provide your fix. Starting from 31 May to 10 June, the Cape Town leg will take place at the Labia Theatre and the Cinema Nouveau at the V&A Waterfront. The festival is a showcase of award winning documentaries from all around the world that will give you something to think about long after the credits roll. My must-see is a look at Vivienne Westwood’s journey in the fashion world for the last 50-something years entitled ‘Westwood’. There is also ‘The Beautiful People’ which follows five international models over Cape Town summer season produced by film maker Nicky Greenwall – yes that Nicky Greenwall from Showbiz fame – and is said to show the occasionally grim realities of a business usually perceived as glamorous. Some of the other highlights include the world premiere of ‘Survivors’ which is set in Sierra Leone about the community’s reaction and response to the Ebola Crisis. ‘Whispering Truth to Power’ about Thuli Madonsela’s last year as SA’s public prosecutor and ‘Matangi/Maya/MIA’ which about Sri Lankan British rapper MIA and her journey and struggle within the music industry. The event is also a platform to uplift the local film industry through workshops and master classes for new and seasoned filmmakers keen to up their game for more info and the full schedule check out Encounters.co.za.
