6/25/2018

Besides the top class art, culture and wine that we’ve come to expect as the norm on the first Thursday of the month, some of the best art and history museums will be opening their doors to the public on Thursday 28 June, free of charge.

Exploring museums, after dark as a continuation of the usual First Thursdays festivities? Sounds like it could be a vibe.

Participating venues include:
Picture
  • Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa which is the largest museum of contemporary African Art. Ashamed to admit that I still haven’t visited here or the Louvre (in Abu Dhabi). Will need to remedy this asap.
  • The Nelson Mandela Gateway which showcases exhibitions about local political history.
  • Iziko Maritime Museum features the rich cultural heritage of shipping before it became something exclusively associated with online purchases.
  • The Cape Medical Museum is probably not my first choice for a night time venue but if venturing into an old city hospital for contagious diseases sounds like your idea of a good night out then pull in.
  • Everard Read CIRCA is Africa’s oldest commercial art gallery founded in 1913 before setting roots in Cape Town in 1996.
  • Robben Island Jetty Museum is a national monument that’s been turned into a small museum which used to be a prison.
  • Chavonnes Battery Museum was a fort built in the 18th century it also served as a prison and quarantine for the old Somerset Hospital.
  • Springbok Rugby Museum is an interactive museum celebrating the sport with over 60 audiovisual displays and artifacts.
  • Two Oceans Aquarium will also be open to the public for half the regular price.

Starts at 5pm until 10pm
