Read about the race between HyperloopTT and Hyperloop One so far here. Following last week’s announcement from HyperloopTT stating plans are underway for the development for the first ever hyperloop route in partnership with Aldar properties, the Road and Transport Authority (RTA) 'pulled the brakes' on the festivities by taking to Twitter and basically telling everyone (but especially HyperloopTT) to calm down. In a series of tweets last Thursday RTA said that there are no plans to build hyperloops in the UAE anytime soon, stating “the system is still under the process of research and development and RTA is closely following the developments in this technology”. Well that was quick, as it was then announced on Sunday evening in a glam ceremony on-board the Queen Elizabeth 2 that Richard Branson’s competing hyperloop tech company Virgin Hyperloop One would be behind the first hyperloop system in the UAE in partnership with DP World, set to be operational by 2025 (at the earliest).
The newly named company is called DP World Cargospeed and this hyperloop system is designed to move cargo at a speed of 1200 km/hr. The announcement was attended by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE – and as far as endorsements go in the UAE, it doesn’t get any more official than that. Well played Hyperloop One.
